Sleep Apnea Treatment
If you suffer from sleep apnea, you should know there are three kinds of sleep apnea treatment
that can help you get a better night's sleep and wake up feeling more refreshed.
The three types of sleep apnea treatment most of often used to overcome this disease are:
Mechanical devices
These non-invasive devices are designed to keep you breathing normally throughout the night. In other
words, they eliminate the apneas or breath pauses that are the hallmark of sleep apnea.
The "tried and true" device in this category is called CPAP or Continuous Possitive Airway Pressure.
It consists of a mask, a tube and a machine that pumps air at a continuous pressure to your nose via the
mask.
A second mechanical device for sleep apnea treatment is called VPAP or Variable Positive Airway Pressure.
This machine is like a CPAP machine except it has an electronic circuit that monitors your breathing. It
is sometimes called BiPAP because it has two different pressures, a higher one during inhalation and a lower
pressure during exultation.
A new and more sophisticated mechanical device for sleep apnea tratment is APAP or automatic positive
airway pressure. it adjusts pressure continuously with sensors and a computer, incre increasing it when
you are attempting to breathe and decreasing it when the pressure is higher than necessary
DIY Treatments
There are also things you can do yourself to treat sleep apnea. If you are overweight, the most
important thing you can do for your sleep apnea is lose weight. If you sleep on your back, try sleeping
on your side. You can also
cut down on the use of antihistamines, alcohol or tranquilizers
Surgical treatment for
sleep apnea
If your sleep apnea does
not respond to any of these treatments, there are surgical procedures that could actually cure the sleep
apnea. One of these surgeries is called a
turbinectomy
which is the removal or reduction of a nasal
turbinate
), or straightening of the
nasal septum.
A second involves removal or reduction of parts of the
soft palate
and some or all of the
uvula.
